JOSE ACEVEDO And GÓMEZ

The People's Tribune, so called because his speech was crucial to keep the crowd lively on July 20, 1810 had gathered in the Plaza Mayor de Santafé asking Town Meeting, may well represent the value of word in the birth of our Republic.

Acevedo and Gómez was heard by the crowd and by the natives gathered in the council of the city, it also heard the Viceroy and the other authorities present in Santafé realistic. He spoke and his word was heard with attention because he said what needed to be clearly expressed: the Americans had the right to autonomy, it was legitimate to decide el futuro por sí mismos, debían respetar la autoridad del rey pero limitando su poder absoluto, y debían ser representados de manera genuina por diputados elegidos entre los miembros de sus propias comunidades.

He became a merchant and amassed fortunes in these activities, which could complement with his fondness for reading the classic Greco-Roman and English books kept in his personal library. Successful in business and enlightened man, Acevedo and Gómez won the confidence of his contemporaries. They elected him Attorney of Santa Fe, that is, defending the rights of the inhabitants of the city, and then in 1808 acquired the status of Perpetual Regidor of the Cabildo of Santa Fe. As such Amar told the Viceroy in September 1809 the Santa Fe should be organized in a Governing Board, which made it dangerous for English authorities.

In his words were heard many times that if there was organized a Board of Governors in the city the king's authority would be threatened by the danger posed to the stability of the realm of the possible dissolution of the Board of Seville. This was said in letters to relatives and acquaintances, and put it in political meetings were held in the city, they had to explain the night of July 19, 1810 when the Astronomical Observatory meeting decided what should be done the next day to organize the long-awaited Board of Governors.

And it was done. This Friday, July 20, from dusk and late night meeting in the council chamber of the board formed and shaped to a provisional government but the germ of our Republic. This cost him his life. Years later, in 1817, wanting to escape because he was convicted for the mere fact of wanting to be free and live as such, left the city to the mountains of Andaquíes where he died. But his word was: the Declaration of Independence contains, its legacy and political testament. It decided to "lay on the full Board the Supreme Government of this Kingdom temporarily, while the Board itself is the Constitution that will strengthen public happiness, with the noble Provinces to which at the moment will be asked their Deputies, by signing this body the regulations for the elections in those provinces, and both it and the Constitution of Government shall be formed on the basis of freedom and independence from them, linked only by a system federation, whose representation shall reside in the capital, to ensure the safety of New Granada, that protest is not abdicate the essential rights of sovereignty of the people to another person than to his August and unfortunate monarch Ferdinand VII, provided come to reign among us, leaving for now this new government subject to the Superior Board of Regency, meantime there in the Peninsula, and the Constitution that gives the people.

His word still does not provide for independence, which then included and will come true as he signed the declaration of absolute independence from Spain of the Republic of Tunja in 1813, but by that Act of 1810 unequivocally expresses the autonomy of peoples is the foundation of freedom. His words could not be clearer: the Republic is the condition of Independence. ----------
